This book was hard to follow in the beginning。 By the middle of the book, I was understanding the different characters and the point of the story。 It follows the story of Christian on his journey to Christ。 Everyone thinks that he is crazy, and it is his trust in God that helps him throughout his adventure。 Personally, this is not a book that I would read on my own time。 I believe that it has good morals, but I would not have read outside of school。 Someone who just began a relationship with Chr This book was hard to follow in the beginning。 By the middle of the book, I was understanding the different characters and the point of the story。 It follows the story of Christian on his journey to Christ。 Everyone thinks that he is crazy, and it is his trust in God that helps him throughout his adventure。 Personally, this is not a book that I would read on my own time。 I believe that it has good morals, but I would not have read outside of school。 Someone who just began a relationship with Christ would like this book。 It would help you better grow closer to God。 - Yanet Thorne 。。。more

It seems like I should have read this years ago and am glad to have finally done so。 It is alluded to so often and is such a part of so many books, that I've been feeling its lack in my reading。I enjoyed the story, the reader, and TBH the teaching in it。 It may be didactic and not pure story, but it's still important and the ideas presented are worth considering。 Anyway, this was an "ought" that I needed to mark off my list and I'm glad I enjoyed it anyway :) It seems like I should have read this years ago and am glad to have finally done so。 It is alluded to so often and is such a part of so many books, that I've been feeling its lack in my reading。I enjoyed the story, the reader, and TBH the teaching in it。 It may be didactic and not pure story, but it's still important and the ideas presented are worth considering。 Anyway, this was an "ought" that I needed to mark off my list and I'm glad I enjoyed it anyway :) 。。。more

The Pilgrim’s Progress is a Christian allegory written in the 1600’s on how to get into Heaven。 Reading this book is part of my high school English class syllabus (yes, it is a Christian school)。 I found this book rather boring and at times difficult to follow between the scripture references and old-world word choices。 I feel that this would be great for someone interested in early Christian beliefs and writing styles。

The Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical tale in which the journey of the human soul is portrayed by the experiences of a man named Christian as he strives towards the Celestial City, a parallel to Heaven。 Along the way, Christian meets with many dangers, enjoys periods of respite and reflection, and encounters a wide range of characters who help and hinder him as he grows steadily closer to his goal。All told, this extensive tale offers some great insight into the oftentimes invisible struggles The Pilgrim's Progress is an allegorical tale in which the journey of the human soul is portrayed by the experiences of a man named Christian as he strives towards the Celestial City, a parallel to Heaven。 Along the way, Christian meets with many dangers, enjoys periods of respite and reflection, and encounters a wide range of characters who help and hinder him as he grows steadily closer to his goal。All told, this extensive tale offers some great insight into the oftentimes invisible struggles faced by a Christian as they begin to build their faith。 By personifying vices, virtues, and other influential factors both physical and spiritual, John Bunyan made many difficult-to-parse struggles more accessible。 As a visual learner myself, I really enjoyed how imagery in The Pilgrim's Progress encouraged me to picture my own personal difficulties in the form of physical obstacles--difficult terrain, monsters, and so on。 My only quibble with this work is that it is by very nature a period piece; without annotations, I likely would not have been able to come away from my reading with as much insight as I have now solely on account of the book's linguistic style。 Many references and words are likely to escape readers who, like myself, lack a great deal of understanding about the time period into which the book was written。The Pilgrim's Progress is definitely considered a classic work for a reason, and I feel that most readers could come away with some benefit from giving it a try。 Its message and ideas will certainly be a bit more applicable to Christians or those interested in Christianity, but even those who don't identify with Christianity will be able to draw some insights about history and allegory from this book。 It serves as a great introduction to allegory in particular since it doesn't shroud its meaning as thoroughly as do many other pieces in the genre。 Those who struggle to see beyond the outward story when it comes to other allegorical works will find The Pilgrim's Progress a great starting point, as long as they don't mind sifting through some antiquated lingo along the way。 If you're looking to gain some Christian insight, dip your toes into allegory, or check another classic off your reading list, The Pilgrim's Progress is worth checking out! 。。。more

The story starts with a man, called Christian, suffering from fear。 He reads a book in hand which tells him at hat his city will be destroyed, and he finds that he has a heavy burden on his back。 He cries day and night, not knowing what to do to be rid of his burden and escape the coming destruction。 One day he meets a man named Evangelist who shows him a narrow gate to which he can go to escape。 Immediately, he starts his way to the gate, but Evangelist is not the only one Christian meets; ther The story starts with a man, called Christian, suffering from fear。 He reads a book in hand which tells him at hat his city will be destroyed, and he finds that he has a heavy burden on his back。 He cries day and night, not knowing what to do to be rid of his burden and escape the coming destruction。 One day he meets a man named Evangelist who shows him a narrow gate to which he can go to escape。 Immediately, he starts his way to the gate, but Evangelist is not the only one Christian meets; there are those who try to fool him, those who try to help him, and those who try to kill him on his journey。 Christian goes on an amazing journey filled with people and places which explain great and powerful Christian values and truth。 The story gives examples of many people are different stages of life, which are very relatable to the real world。 The book is really an eye-opener to many spiritual concepts and their importance。 It is a truly wonderful and enjoyable book。 Anyone who wants to learn more about concepts from the Bible, or just enjoys reading about a great adventure, would definitely love this book。 。。。more

The Pilgrim's Progress is a story about a guy named Christian on his journey in life and his walk in his faith。 Throughout the book Christian faces many trials that represent the trials that we face in our lives and it gives a really cool birds eye view to the walk in faith and the meaning of life。 This was a really good book。 Once you get used to John Bunyan's style of writing it really isn't that hard to read either considering how long ago it was written。 It is a good read for anybody, though The Pilgrim's Progress is a story about a guy named Christian on his journey in life and his walk in his faith。 Throughout the book Christian faces many trials that represent the trials that we face in our lives and it gives a really cool birds eye view to the walk in faith and the meaning of life。 This was a really good book。 Once you get used to John Bunyan's style of writing it really isn't that hard to read either considering how long ago it was written。 It is a good read for anybody, though if you want to read it with small children, most of the allegory will likely just go over their heads。 We watched the movie at a summer camp with 2nd-4th graders and I think they missed most of the meaning in the story but it was still interesting to them and they enjoyed it。 This book is good if you are looking for a good allegory or if you are a Christian or looking to be one。 If you are new to the faith, most of the biblical references might go over your head so I highly recommend a book with annotations。 Also if you are wondering about the meaning of life and the struggles we face, this covers it pretty well。 Enjoy :) 。。。more

A great read - describing a man’s journey through life and all its pitfalls and challenges。 Choosing the “better way” to reach his ultimate destination, the Celestial City。

I can think of a few different metrics by which I might evaluate this book。。。 If I went by readability, I might rank it lower。 If instead I think about it in terms of sheer ambition and cultural formation, it's hard not to rate it highly。 I'm glad I read it and I'm glad my students encountered this book in Brit Lit。 I hope that at least aspects of the story will stay with them。 For me, I was most impressed by the ways in which Bunyan's fiction relays vital truths that are surprisingly relevant, I can think of a few different metrics by which I might evaluate this book。。。 If I went by readability, I might rank it lower。 If instead I think about it in terms of sheer ambition and cultural formation, it's hard not to rate it highly。 I'm glad I read it and I'm glad my students encountered this book in Brit Lit。 I hope that at least aspects of the story will stay with them。 For me, I was most impressed by the ways in which Bunyan's fiction relays vital truths that are surprisingly relevant, even though veiled in a format that many readers (including past versions of myself) have found a little too "on the nose" to enjoy。 I enjoyed it much more this time and was able to see just how important the details were for each character。 Reading it more as a work of stern warning rather than a work of saccharine encouragement, I was able to see the important lesson Bunyan offers about the life of faith: There are so many ways to lose sight of the goal, get off course, and be tempted towards expedience。 But God sends encouragers, often at just the right time, if we will only heed their wisdom。 。。。more

I abhor this book。 It puts guardrails on imagination。 A pilgrim sets out on his pilgrimage to the holy land。 His name is Christian。 He meets characters named Feeble-minded, Talkative。。。 He gets beaten down by a giant called Despair。 Naming is characterization in the novel, and allegory is so blatantly isomorphic, you would be better off either reading Bible stories or actually imaginative works of fiction that wrestle with human beings' spiritual condition。 Seldom has a reading experience felt l I abhor this book。 It puts guardrails on imagination。 A pilgrim sets out on his pilgrimage to the holy land。 His name is Christian。 He meets characters named Feeble-minded, Talkative。。。 He gets beaten down by a giant called Despair。 Naming is characterization in the novel, and allegory is so blatantly isomorphic, you would be better off either reading Bible stories or actually imaginative works of fiction that wrestle with human beings' spiritual condition。 Seldom has a reading experience felt like such a waste of time。 。。。more

Hm, generally a very interesting book, and the writing style is also pleasing。 I just don‘t like people being tortured again and agin for the sake of happiness。 Don‘t think thats what life is about。

Our family reads this together a couple times a year。 This winter, the kids graduated from the kids version (which is good but at 8, 6, 6, 6 they were ready for the real thing)。We finished tonight and I’m reminded how much I LOVE this book。 Highly applicable in 2021。 Next to the Bible, it’s the book every Christian should read。

How does one rate a book that was so formative to the invention of English literature? I did not necessarily enjoy much of the experience of reading Christian's progress—Christiana's was worse, since it largely consisted of her and the children pointing at various sites and asking their guide, "Hey is this where Dad fought off the monster of Despond?" and their guide saying, "Indeed, and there is a monument here that repeats the lesson he learned and you learned in the reading of the first book" How does one rate a book that was so formative to the invention of English literature? The Pilgrim's Progress is often considered the best allegory of all time。 The book tells the story of a young pilgrim named Christian and his journey to find salvation。 He flees his home, the City of Destruction, with a heavy burden and no sense of direction。 Along the way, he meets many people who point him towards Christ and the Celestial City, but there are many others that try to lead him astray or defeat him altogether。 All in all, I think it was a good book。 The style is very unique, so it The Pilgrim's Progress is often considered the best allegory of all time。 The book tells the story of a young pilgrim named Christian and his journey to find salvation。 He flees his home, the City of Destruction, with a heavy burden and no sense of direction。 Along the way, he meets many people who point him towards Christ and the Celestial City, but there are many others that try to lead him astray or defeat him altogether。 All in all, I think it was a good book。 The style is very unique, so it takes a little bit to get used to。 However, the story itself was tied together and written really well, especially considering Bunyan was in prison when he wrote it。 I think Christians would really appreciate this book for the symbolism scattered throughout, but truthfully, this book is an excellent book for all ages and backgrounds。 The main reason I rated it 4 stars was because I personally enjoyed The Little Pilgrim's Progress better。 The story is the same, but the writing style is more modern and enjoyable in my opinion。 。。。more
